Comparing photography and 3D rendering

Sometimes less is more

In some cases it’s obvious which produces more easily good looking images, 3D or photography. Take for instance portraits or food shots. There really is no contest at the moment: photography rules. Then there are all sorts images that would be harder to create using real world photography: It’s certainly possible to make a cut-away [...]

Making of “Sinking Earth” image

This image is available as photo print from deviantART: click here to buy the image! Sometimes ideas just pop into my head… this image was definitely one of those. Once I had the idea, I really felt I needed to create the image. This is a short “making of” for the image.

Sinking Earth

Is this our future? Maya + mental ray. Just for fun.

Animation and rendering demo reel

Here is my animation and rendering demo reel.

Pumilio Tiempo user manual

This is a user manual I wrote for a radio controlled motorcycle. All the CAD data in images was created with Pro/ENGINEER. Icons and some texts were added in CorelDraw and final page layout was done in PageMaker.

Ensto Cubo P catalog

ecp_catalog_01_large

This is a product catalog I did for Ensto Control Oy. The images were rendered in LightWave from exported Pro/ENGINEER data. Page layout is done with PageMaker.

Photorealism in Pro/Photorender and beyond

Product photographs taken for marketing purposes are more than photographs: The product is polished and cleaned with great care and every reflection and shadow is painstakingly checked. To take real photographs you need a real product or at least very realistic mock-up. What if you could make the same advertising photos using only Pro/E data [...]

Wireframes with MR and Paint Effects

wireframe_test_small

This image was generated by first rendering with MR and outputting contours as PostScript file. The PS file was then imported back to Maya and some turbulance was added to vertices to make the lines less perfect. The lines were rendered with Paint Effects to get “pen-like” look. The original 3D model was Pro/ENGINEER file [...]

Capturing mental ray rays

I made a mental ray shader and small utility program to capture and display rays during rendering. It’s just a proof of concept (and a proof that I can still code, if I need to…). The shader operates as environment shader, so it sees all fired rays. It uses a named pipe to send ray data. [...]

Electric chair

When I made this image I wondered if the connection is for heating or maybe vibration or it could be something else… Maya + mental ray. Just for fun. This image is now available as photographic print through deviantART. Click here to buy the image.
