The green stuff coming out of a test tube may be just what you were hoping. Maya + mental ray. Just for fun.
This image is now available as photographic print through deviantART. Click here to buy the image.
How it was done
There is a background plate with two textured spot light. One is for overall lighting the other for the hot spot. Just behind and around the background plate there is a white card that creates reflections on the test tubes. There is similar white card below the tubes also. Rest of the environment is black. The red stuff in test tubes is lit with couple of spot lights (with no shadows). White card material has 1.2 incandescence, so it’s “super white”. This keeps reflections closer to white even through glass.
While scanning money for the image a funny thing happened, Photoshop didn’t open my scanned image… read more about it here.
The concept
The idea here is that sometimes the odd looking stuff in the test tube or on Petri dish is actually worth money, lots of money in some cases. I am sure bio-med professionals can see past the look of bacteria and fungus, but for the rest of us it can be difficult to see value in slimy goo
